Held by the Cyprus partner of the project, the fourth CoP provided an overview of the actions taken by the island’s Deputy Ministry of Tourism to adapt to new tourism trends, including a greater emphasis on sustainable and authentic experiences, as well as the enrichment and inclusion of rural areas. The role of tourism and individuals as political actors was illustrated with the example of Airbnb hosts collectively using their properties to assist Ukrainian refugees, while the humanitarian actions and services of KEPAKY have significantly contributed to the integration of Ukrainian refugees into Cypriot society.

Tourism trends and needs

Key Insights

From Mass Tourism to Meaningful Experiences

Cyprus embraced post-pandemic trends by promoting sustainability, nature, and authenticity. Its five-pillar strategy supports small villages, repurposed hotels, and themed tourism labels rooted in tradition and green transition. The aim: a more balanced and adaptable tourism ecosystem.

Tourism as a Political Tool

Travel has become a form of political expression and humanitarian response. From the Heartland of Legends route to Airbnb’s support during the Ukraine crisis, tourism networks demonstrate their ability to act more swiftly than governments, facilitating both voluntary and forced mobility.

Tourism Empowering Refugees

A Cyprus-based non-profit organisation has supported Ukrainian refugees through housing, employment assistance, and education. Fully funded summer schools and preschool programmes offer children stability and provide parents with the opportunity to work, demonstrating how tourism and civil society can foster resilience and inclusion.

Practical Tools and Methods

Tourism must be considered a holistic approach that engages not only the tourist but also the destination in an inclusive manner.

Politics influences individuals’ mobility (travel), but individuals also have the power to influence politics through their mobility (travel).
